Finally, the event the the supermarket glossies have dreamt of for years is going to happen. The Brangelina wedding is on.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – who last appeared onscreen together in 2005’s Mr and Mrs Smith, have been a couple for almost a decade, and who have vowed never to wed until same-sex marriage is legal throughout the US – will finally tie the knot.

But no, you haven’t missed a major legislative change in the land of the free: they will marry on the big screen only, not for real.

The nuptials will come in By The Sea, in which the couple will star. The film is being written by Jolie, who also plans to direct.

The only other name currently linked with the project is Australian cinematographer Dean Semler, who won an Oscar in 1991 for his work on Kevin Costner’s Dances With Wolves.

Little is known of the plot of By The Sea, but THR claims “a source” has revealed “that the pair, who will produce, will be hitched onscreen”.

It is unclear whether the film will be produced as a project of Pitt’s Plan B production entity (which had a pair of major successes last year with 12 Years A Slave and World War Z) or under the umbrella of Universal, which is financing the picture.

Jolie’s first outing as a director was on the 2007 documentary A Place In Time and her first feature was the Bosnian war drama In The Land of Blood and Honey in 2011. Her second feature, Unbroken, based on the life of American Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini, is due to open in January 2015.

By The Sea is scheduled for release the following year.
