E.T.'s cycle flight in front of the moon has been named the most memorable scene ever from 100 years of movies made by cinema giant Universal.

The winning scene, set to John Williams' famous score, dates back to 1982 as the lovable alien is carried in the basket of a bicycle pedalled by his friend Elliott in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

Film fans ranked Australian actor Russell Crowe's performance in Gladiator in fourth place, for his speech beginning "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius".

Universal commissioned its poll to coincide with its centenary.
