In the 3D Ice Age: Continental Drift, Ray Romano returns as the voice of Manny, the solid and dependable patriarch of his woolly mammoth family.
''But in reality I have to be honest and say my wife is the rock of the family,'' Romano says. The comic actor who starred in the long-running sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond had revealed earlier this year that his wife Anna had successfully battled breast cancer in 2010 and they were now going public to help people. ''She's fine now and healthy but I look at her and I don't know if I could be as strong as she was going through that,'' he says. ''She's my Manny.''
In the fourth instalment of the popular Ice Age franchise, the beloved squirrel-rat, Scrat, returns in pursuit of his cursed acorn, but this time he accidentally triggers a continental cataclysm that forces the herd to head for safer ground. Manny is separated from his wife Ellie (Queen Latifah) and daughter, Peaches (Keke Palmer), when he's swept away on an iceberg.
''This film is all about family and I could identify with that theme because parenthood never ends; my mum still calls me up and tells me to take my cholesterol medicine!'' he says.
The 54-year-old actor has been married for 24 years and has four children; Alexandra, 22, twins Matthew and Gregory, 19, and Joseph, 14, so he also related to Manny's overprotectiveness with his teenage daughter in the film. ''My kids are growing up and it's hard to accept they are their own person and they're independent,'' he says.
''As I see my older children becoming these adults, I just want to freeze the 14-year-old, although he's already [188 centimetres] so I may be a little too late.''
Romano was born to Italian-American parents and studied accounting at Queens College for three years before abandoning a banking career for stand-up comedy. In 2004 he became the highest-paid actor on TV on Everybody Loves Raymond and, when that show finished, he co-created Men of a Certain Age, which was cancelled earlier this year. ''My career has been my craziest adventure.''
