Matt Damon on what is motivating Jason Bourne's return

Matt Damon confirms Jason Bourne return

If you thought Matt Damon's Jason Bourne was tortured enough already, just wait. The actor has revealed his most famous character returns fuelled by real-world angst at a time democracy has lost meaning.

"We find him in a dark and tortured place," Damon told Entertainment Weekly, confirming real-world distrust of institutions forms a back-drop for Bourne resuming the search for his own identity in the as-yet untitled fifth film in the hit action series.

"There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties."

Although the fourth movie, The Bourne Legacy, received middling reviews and was the least successful, the appetite for a fifth is strong partly because of Damon's return to the lead role. He was absent in Legacy, while Jeremy Renner played another agent on the run.

Overall the series - comprising The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Bourne Legacy (2012) - made more than US$1.2 billion at the box office and received strong reviews.

Earlier, Damon had told Buzzfeed News the trilogy of films he appeared in (between 2002 and 2007) were "about the Bush presidency and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change".

"Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-[Edward] Snowden world," Damon said.

"It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."

In 2013, US Senator John McCain told Fox News CIA employee turned whistleblower Snowden was viewed by a younger generation in the US as: "some kind of Jason Bourne".

Julia Stiles returns in Bourne 5 as Nicky Parsons, while Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) will also appear. in 2015, Variety reported Viggo Mortensen had been offered a role as an assassin tracking Bourne but had not yet accepted.

Variety also reported Damon saying Bourne reappears after being off the grid for 12 years in the new film, which begins filming in Greece and, according to Damon concludes in Las Vegas.

Bourne 5 is due out in mid July 2016.
