Saw the Sydney Premiere last night at the State Theatre.

This is an excellent movie, acknowledged by the audience with loads of laughter, applause and, at the end, a standing ovation that ended only because Jessica Mauboy and her musicians came on stage to belt out a set of excellent soul classics. Wow, that girl can sing!

The 'guest spot' was an aside, part of the Sony promotion, but it didn't change the fact that this is an enjoyable movie. It has a well balanced mix of fun and depth to help us reflect on how, despite incredible odds, there's hope that determination and devotion can make a positive difference to addressing the wrongs that were (and still are) out there.

10/10 to the writers, production team and actors for creating a very entertaining and honest look at a difficult problem that isn't going to fix itself.

A special thanks to the original Sapphires for giving us this story and for their relentless, ongoing work in the field of Indigenous health.

To all Australians, go and see this movie, you won't be disappointed.

I saw this film on the plane - before it opened in the cinemas, surprisingly. It certainly was an entertaining, feel-good, movie. It had a big budget feel, with the Vietnamese locations, some international cast, and well known music (almost all 60s soul). The songs were generally presented as complete performances, not just excerpts, so don't expect the plot to advance during the singing bits!
