I used to watch the original series when I was a kid.
It ultimately became frustrating because the show would build up for 29 minutes and 45 seconds and then close just as Barnabas Collins is sinking his teeth into the neck of his next victim and then presto! - the next episode would push the reset button and all the events of the previous episode, forgotten, never referenced again or mentioned in any way at all.

Haven't seen it yet but bought dvds of the tv series a couple of years ago because I loved the show as a kid. It was appalling! Maybe Burton and Depp have captured the essence of the original.

I enjoyed this. It was silly, irreverent and exactly what the shorts promised. It was also an amusing mix of every movie genre. Eva Green was perfect and what's not to love about Johnny Depp in these sorts of roles. Michelle Pfeiffer camped it up and Helena Bonham Carter was her usual fabulous self. Oh, and there were no teenage movie-goers in my session; moreso the 25-35 age group.

Hmm such a scathing review by the Age! I myself cant wait to see it Sunday and I am still collecting the series on DVD , I am to up to Vol 13.

I am usually very forgiving when dealing with movies that are based on beloved childhood themes (okay, I confess, I love vampire stories) and that involve some of my favourite actors (John Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham-Carter). I read the bad reviews but still took an afternoon off from work to savour this little bit of my past. After all, I'm known for liking stuff other people think is just bad. Unfortunately, I have to agree that this movie is awful. It's just boring. If it was on television, I would have switched channels after the first 10 minutes. But, being kind of stingy, I sat through it till the end. I recognized the one-liners, the visual gags, the efforts to be outrageous ... but none of it worked. At least not for me.
I wonder if this means I've finally gotten too old for camp. God, I hope not.
