Trailer: Top Gun

As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom.

Speculation about a sequel to the action classic has reached fever pitch after original producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself and Cruise with the caption: "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2."

This latest teaser from Bruckheimer comes after years of hints and on-again-off-again rumours about a sequel.

Last year, Cruise himself gave the strongest hint yet that he would be sliding back into the cockpit of a navy fighter in the iconic role of Maverick.

"It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets," he said at the premiere of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

Then Val Kilmer, who played Cruise's nemesis, Iceman, in the original, re-ignited the rumour afterburners with a Facebook post apparently confirming the old gang was getting back together.

"Let's fire up some fighter jets again!!!" he said, before retracting the "announcement" explaining cryptically that he had "jumped the top gun".

Top Gun was a massive hit at the time and made Tom Cruise a star with his role as the loose-cannon pilot at the elite air school. Kelly McGillis co-starred and the film also spawned the massive hit song Take My Breath Away.
