With the whole man-behind-a-piano, Australian-in-the-United-States thing going for him I couldn’t help but be reminded of another Australian who went off and did similar things.
This cleverly romantic collection of songs keeps you involved, and does have a little of the less flamboyant Peter Allen about it.
There is even a track about Australia (Barry for President). The lead single Two Alarms is the work’s most indie pop sounding, and is one that stands up well to repeated scrutiny.Amusing, bright and catchy, you can tell why he offered this up first.
Over the remaining 12 songs Spark simmers and shines. With the predominant mood thoughtful and approaching sombre, his observational lyrics and rambling piano are mellow and moreish.
