Beyonce performs in Perth.

While claims are being made that Taylor Swift's upcoming stadium tour will be the biggest event of the year, Beyonce Knowles has made a $40 million statement of her own.

Knowles' The Mrs Carter Show played to more than 200,000 people across Australia in 10 shows, and four more in Auckland. The tour, which wrapped up in Perth at the weekend, brought in more than $40 million.

With generally positive reviews and almost all sold-out shows – not to mention regular appearances in print and on TV despite Knowles making hardly any public appearances beyond a film clip shot in Melbourne and Newcastle – the tour was a success for the US singer and the promoter of her Australian and New Zealand leg. Michael Coppel, of Live Nation Australasia, may have missed out on the coming Swift tour but his pockets have certainly not suffered.

“This tour has been an absolute stand out in terms of the showcasing [of Beyonce's] unparalleled talent, energy and joy for performing in one of the most spectacular productions ever to visit this country,” Coppel said in a statement.

By comparison the Bruce Springsteen tour earlier this year generated $25 million in ticket sales, Pink's mid year visit is estimated to have grossed more than $40 million, while last year Coldplay made $4.7 million from shows at Sydney's Acer Arena alone.
