Bring it Back (Obese Records)

Three Stars

Say what you want about Illy, but he's consistent. And he has talented mates, which is no small thing in the tight-knit Aussie hip-hop scene.

Produced mostly by M-Phazes and Trials from Funkoars, this record sees Illy finding his groove. The surprising thing is that he meanders through tracks such as Bring it Back and Heard It All; when it's on high-energy tracks such as 6 Shooter that he really kicks it. Illy's biggest hit so far has been the collaboration with Owl Eyes, It Can Wait and, similarly, some of the strongest tracks on this record are collaborations with other artists. It's good to see Pez back, kicking goals on Where Ya Been, and The Real is elevated by the presence of the always wonderful MC Mantra and his partner in crime Grey Ghost. Thundamentals, usually amazing, bring the noise on All the Above, but it's far from their strongest flow.

Now that he's finished his law degree, Illy has an alternative career in the wings should he need it. But considering that he's on his third album, the hip-hop thing seems to be working out pretty well, and the legal fraternity will just have to wait.
