Courtney Love announces tour for her Australian "Lovers"

Courtney Love, one of indie rock's most tragic, divisive and driven figures, has announced her first Australan tour in 15 years with a spicy Twitter message.

It will be a solo tour, rather than with her band Hole, and begins in Perth on August 13 before her tight schedule takes her through Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane, Newcastle, Canberra and Sydney.

She teased the tour - in more ways than one - via her "Courtney Love Cobain" Twitter account, saying: "To all my Aussie friends and Lovers, it's been a long time! I'm coming to see you!" She last toured Australia with her band Hole in 1999, when they headlined the Big Day Out.

Love, once described by Rolling Stone as the most controversial woman in the history of rock, will be brought to Australia by Melbourne company Lennard Promotions which specialises in legacy acts.

At age 12 Love auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club - which gave starts to Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera - but was famously rejected after reading a Sylvia Plath poem. Love changed schools regularly - and even enrolled at a girls' school in New Zealand - before returning to the United States on her own and living in foster care. At age 17 Love lived briefly in the United Kingdom where she met Julian Cope. She returned to the US and studied film while supporting herself with several jobs including erotic dancing.

She became interested in singing and songwriting in her teens and briefly sang with Faith No More, before playing in several other bands, one of which become Hole. She achieved critical and commerial success with Hole, earning respect for her uncompromising style and raw, honest songwriting and vocals.

Hole has gone through multiple lineup changes and achieve considerable commercial success, with Live Through This (released a week after Kurt Cobain, her husband, died in 1994) and then Celebrity Skin (in 1998). Hole split in 2002 but Love released another album in the band's name in 2010, Nobody's Daughter, despite the opposition of her estranged bandmates.

She also released a solo record, America's Sweetheart, in 2004 and has reportedly written several songs recently. She released two songs this year, Wedding Day and You Know My Name, and has raised the prospect of a genuine Hole reunion.

Love is also a talented actress, her earliest major role coming in 1986 the Sid Vicious biopic Sid & Nancy and later in The People vs Larry Flynt, a role for which she was asked to provide urine tests to prove her sobriety. Love has had many battles with addiction. She has also acted in Basquiat, Feeling Minnesota, Man on the Moon and Trapped.
