Darren Hayes, singer and mentor on The Voice.
When Gotye hit No.1 in the US, it was the first Australian No.1 there since you guys, Savage Garden, in 2000 …
Which shocked me.
Any advice for him on riding the wave?
You know, I think he's got such a great attitude about it all really.
It profoundly changes your life but you don't realise it for decades afterwards, really.
At the time, he probably feels like we did. Both times we got that call, that our single was No.1 [in the US], we were in the middle of … a hurricane of activity and really couldn't smell the roses. People say, ''Make sure you enjoy it'' but you can't, you're too busy, and you don't understand what has happened to you.
When do you understand?
It is years and years later when you're like me and have the ability to make choices in life that are funded by your No.1. All of my artistic choices, the things I do in my life, have been profoundly changed because at one point in my career the whole world was singing my song.
Do you miss Savage Garden?
That's a great question, no one ever asks me that. People always ask if we're going to get back together. Um, I have some really, really fond memories of the band. But the answer that people would love to hear isn't the one I really feel. I've spent so long on my own that I actually can't remember what it was like to be in a band … Someone sent me a video of us on the red carpet of the American Music Awards and it's really funny. I look like such a wanker. I'm quite grateful I've had a lot of that kicked out of me.
You're appearing on The Voice again tomorrow night. If you had to pair up two of The Voice judges for a battle on stage, who would you choose?
In my experience the battles tend to be between two people I can't pick between. I'd probably put Delta against Keith because I'm partial to my Aussies. You know, I think they're both really talented and it would be quite good television because one of them would have to go home and it would upset half the nation.
Imagine that as a reality show - ''one of these pop star's careers must end!''
