II

Unknown Mortal Orchestra (Jagjaguwar)

Transport yourself back to the swinging '60s with Unknown Mortal Orchestra's II.

The band's second album successfully captures the nostalgic beat of the rock'n'roll era with a sharp psychedelic edge.

This mishmash of genres culminates in Beatles-esque melodies, teamed with wiry guitar lines and raspy vocals. It's like a modern-day Pink Floyd meets classic '60s rock.

II is a breath of fresh air in a world of music dominated by perfectly polished production.

Interestingly, the album was a solo project recorded by vocalist and guitarist Ruban Nielson but is performed by a live trio, including bassist Jake Portrait and drummer Greg Rogove.

The emotional rollercoaster of a gruelling touring schedule is at times reflected in a surrealist image of love and loss, as demonstrated in the catchy debut single Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark).

Electric and likeable, II is a psych-rock experimentation reminiscent of Tame Impala's psychedelic sound but with heavier pop-rock undertones.
