Jet performs surprise Melbourne laneway concert

Re-formed Aussie rockers Jet gave a live, loud lunchtime performance in AC/DC Lane on Tuesday.

After the rain cleared on Tuesday morning, Cester and his brother Chris on drums, guitarist Cameron Muncey, bass player Mark Wilson and keyboardist Louis Macklin gave city workers a blast from the past.

It was a taste of things to come on their upcoming tour, which includes Melbourne's Forum Theatre - just around the corner from today's surprise gig - on June 11. The tour starts on May 29 in Newcastle and from May 31 they play Sydney's Enmore Theatre as part of the seven-date tour.

''Back in the city... back where it all began,'' Cester said before launching into their song Rollover DJ. The frontman stopped to get his own photo from the stage too, as the packed laneway roared for more rock 'n' roll and a new statue of Bon Scott looked over the crowd.

Before hanging up their guitars in 2012, Jet won six ARIA awards and Get Born sold more than 6 million copies, making it one of this country's greatest rock 'n' roll success stories.

The band played a handful of shows last year on Bruce Springsteeen's most recent Australian tour. A couple of Melbourne and Sydney headline shows and a performance at Japan's Fuji Rock festival in the past year added fuel to the collective fire they felt about reforming for this tour.

''We're really excited to play Get Born in full for the first time ever,'' they said, about the upcoming tour. ''We can't wait to get out there and see old friends again and meet plenty of new ones as well.''

To coincide with the tour, Jet will release the album Get Born: Live at the Forum in May.

Tickets to Jet's Get Re-Born tour go on sale March 19 at 10am. A ticket pre-sale opens at 11am on Wednesday, March 14 and runs until Friday, March 16. For more information and tickets go to jetofficial.com and livenation.com.au
