Pop star Justin Bieber has declared that he is retiring, sending social media into a spin on Christmas Day.

At 2.20pm (AEDT) Bieber posted “My beloved beliebers I'm officially retiring” on his official Twitter page.

That prompted more than 136,000 re-tweets in less than an hour.

However the 19-year-old Canadian then returned to social media with two more cryptic comments, fuelling further speculation and confusion from fans and detractors.

“The media talks a lot about me.They make a up a lot of lies and want me to fail but I'm never leaving you, being a belieber is a lifestyle,” he tweeted 42 minutes later.

“Be kind loving to each other, forgive each other as god forgave us through Christ Merry Christmas IM HERE FOREVER”.

Bieber, who has nearly 48 million followers on Twitter and more than 60 million fans on Facebook, came under fire during his recent tour of Australia.

The pop star appeared late on stage and during his visit to Queensland, he was asked by the Gold Coast mayor to clean up a hotel wall that he spray-painted. It later emerged that one of his minders was caught with drugs and the pop star had verbally abused an airport customs worker.

Earlier this month, Bieber hinted he would be taking time away from the music scene during a radio interview.

“I wanna get to know my family more,” he said.

“[I want to use 2014 to] figure out myself as a man. I've been away so much, I've missed a lot of great years with my brother and sister.”
