Digital music giant Spotify has announced the most streamed artists and tracks of 2013.

The Year In Review collects the listening activities of the 24 million Spotify users around the globe. The initial statistics are pretty mindblowing; 4.5 billion hours, or almost 50 000 years worth of music was streamed globally on Spotify alone.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took the top spot around the world as most streamed artist, album (The Heist) and track (Can't Hold Us). The rappers also came second in all three Australian categories. To add to their success, they also scored third top track for Thrift Shop worldwide, and eighth in Australia.

The Seattle duo have taken the world by storm this year. Their popularity in Australia reaching new heights in January, when they scored the number one spot on the Triple J Hottest 100. They've made a name for themselves as staunch supporters and advocates of LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage. Their vocal stance on the topic sets them apart from their hip hop backdrop, often criticised for homophobic, sexist and violent content.

In Australia, Daft Punk and their hit single Get Lucky were the most streamed artist and track, respectively. Their highly-anticipated album Random Access Memories underwent a huge viral marketing campaign, and was the fastest selling album of 2013 - until One Direction knocked them down on December 1. Get Lucky remained the most viral track, both worldwide and in Australia.

The elusive French duo collaborated with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers (who is performing at the Sydney Opera House this Saturday) on Get Lucky, which was also covered by San Cisco for Triple J's Like A Version.

For the second year in a row, bad girl megastar Rihanna was the most streamed female. Kiwi sensation Lorde was the most streamed female in Australia, and the most viral new artist. Royals was also the third top track in Australia.

The most streamed album in Australia was the groundbreaking self-titled debut of golden boy Flume, which has also picked up ARIAs, Triple J Awards and international recognition. The 22-year-old's album has spent 48 weeks in the ARIA charts and is currently at the top of the iTunes charts in Australia and New Zealand.

Other artists who feature prominently in the Spotify lists include Avicii, Calvin Harris (who is currently in the country headlining Stereosonic,) Eminem, Bruno Mars, Pink, Imagine Dragons and Lana Del Ray.
