Seth MacFarlane, creative force behind the TV series Family Guy and director of the feature film Ted, will host the 85th Academy Awards next year.
MacFarlane, 38, will work with first-time Academy Awards producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who made the announcement on Monday and said they're "thrilled" about their choice.
I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.
"His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh," the producers said in a statement.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will host next year's Oscars.
The Oscars routinely rank among the most-watched entertainment TV shows each year. The 2012 program, in which The Artist was crowned best picture, attracted 39.3 million viewers in the US alone, according to data from Nielsen. The 2011 Oscars, with 37.9 million viewers, was the most-watched program that year after the Super Bowl and pro football playoffs.
MacFarlane made his film directorial debut this year with Ted, a Universal Pictures comedy featuring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. The movie, made for about $50 million, took in $434 million ticket sales worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, a film website.
The 38-year-old entertainer also hosted the season opener of Saturday Night Live last month and released an album of big-band tunes from the 1940s and 1950s last year. This is his first time hosting the Academy Awards.
MacFarlane called the opportunity "an overwhelming privilege."
"My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast," he said.
Nominations for the 85th annual Oscars will be announced on January 10 - nearly a week earlier than traditionally revealed and ahead of the Golden Globe Awards.
The Oscars will be presented on February 24.
