Don't just eat it, talk about it

Be prepared for foodinistas talking frankly about their industry.

Think the Crave Sydney International Food Festival already covers every aspect of food? Think again.

This year, besides eating it in secret and not-so-secret locations and watching its transformation by chefs at the top of their game at the World Chef Showcase, food will be the subject of a new program of talks.

Talks and Thoughts brings together high-profile food personalities from around the world to hear what they have to say about topics ranging from food photography and criticism to the necessity of supermarkets. The 10 talks from chefs, restaurateurs, food and wine writers and critics, will take place on October 6-7 at the Sydney Convention Centre.

"People are interested in ideas," the director of the festival, Joanna Savill, says. "Of course, we all love cooking demonstrations and recipes and tastings, but the reality is, there are an awful lot of other issues that happen in the food world and they're interesting. People enjoy thinking beyond the recipe."

Savill is looking forward to two talks in particular: Momofuku founder David Chang will discuss food writing and reading in a multi-platform world on October 6, and Nicholas Lander, the restaurateur turned restaurant reviewer husband of wine writer Jancis Robinson, will talk about the art of the restaurateur on October 7.

"David Chang is involved with a magazine in the States called Lucky Peach. It's a food magazine but it's written by chefs and it's really fascinating because chefs have a different perspective on things," Savill says. Chang will share the stage with European multimedia food journalist Maria Canabal and American food author and editor Colman Andrews, who has branched into the online world with The Daily Meal website.

"The idea is for each of them to tell us what they do and what it looks like and why they do it," Savill says. Lander's talk on Sunday will focus on what it takes to be a successful restaurateur. He will be joined by Fratelli Fresh owner Barry McDonald, Italian journalist Licia Granello, who has profiled female food personalities in Italy, and former Bird Cow Fish restaurateur Alex Herbert.

Kitchen garden tours will also be held throughout October. Join The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide's chef of the year, Peter Gilmore of Quay, on a tour of the garden that supplies vegetables to his restaurant. Another tour takes in the Potts Point balcony of Indira Naidoo, who wrote the book The Edible Balcony.

This year also ushers in an extension of hours for Hyde Park's Night Noodle Markets, from 9pm to 10pm.
