PHILIPPA HAWKER A Most Wanted Man is austere, melancholy, a character study rather than a thriller, and a reminder of the singular talent of its leading man.

This is a spy, surveillance movie on the war on terror. Hoffmans character comes off like Richard Burtons character as a drinker and constant smoker with a cynical battle weary approach from John Le Carre's first film THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD.

There's conflicting factions within German intelligence with silent and different agendas. Beware of the quiet American post 9/11! This film of Le Carre's book isn't as powerful as TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY but a solid film with some shaky camerawork I could have done without. McAdams and Hoffman ground the film with good performances but at times I thought this film should have been acted in German with German actors. Those looking for visceral spy thrills this is not the film for them as it relies on gradual story development through performance.
