A girl named Sprocc, who lives on planet Blipp, wants to live a life of discovery and creativity and playher own music on her Splinterwanger. But on her planet tradition rules and that includes music. Only the Ancient Songs of ages past can be heard and nobody is allowed to change a word or a note. The Musical Inquisitor decides Sprocc must leave Blipp. And so she does in search of musical freedom and then enters the Worst Band in the Universe competition.
So begins Worst Band in the Universe, a musical collaboration between Canberra Youth Theatre and Music for Everyone's Rock Academy. British-born Australian author and illustrator Graeme Base adapted his 1999 book for the stage and the production is directed by former Jigsaw Theatre artistic director Cathy Roach.
Roach says it is a family show combining physical theatre, puppetry and more, with plenty to entertain audiences of all ages.
"It's a terrific little piece. There's music, a chase scene, you name it - we've got it."
The cast of 12 range in age from eight to 13 and there are two rock bands playing the music, their members aged from 10 to 17.
"We've used Graeme Base's illustrations and colours to inform our costumes,'' Roach says,
"It's a beautiful, colourful world we've created."
It is the first time she has directed Worst Band in the Universe and she thinks this might be the Canberra premiere of the show.
As for the title, without wanting to give too much away, it's not necessarily what it might seem. Creativity, self-expression and being yourself might not be valued on Blipp. But not everywhere is like that.
