Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn has nabbed a leading role in an upcoming Netflix drama from the creators of acclaimed series Damages.

Mendelsohn has been making steady progress in the US after featuring in the final Batman instalment, The Dark Knight Rises.

Most recently, he's been seen in drama The Place Beyond the Pines and alongside Brad Pitt in the acclaimed crime-thriller Killing Them Softly.

The Animal Kingdom actor will play a black sheep who unsettles his siblings' lives after suddenly resurfacing, The Hollywood Reporter says.

He'll spar with Emmy winner Kyle Chandler as his younger brother, who has become the responsible, caretaker member of the family.

Creators Glenn Kessler, Todd A Kessler and Daniel Zelman plan to make 13 episodes of the show, which is yet to be titled.

The drama will be produced by Sony Pictures Television.

And a good omen for Mendelsohn - the three creators' previous series, Damages, gave fellow Australian Rose Byrne her big break in Hollywood.
