Sunrise weather presenter Edwina Bartholomew's teary-eyed handover to Sam Mac

Edwina Bartholomew has broken down on air while ending her stint as Sunrise's roving weather presenter.

After three years on the road presenting the weather from every corner of the country, the 32-year-old is being replaced by comedian Sam Mac (Sam McMillan).

Mac was announced as Sunrise's newest recruit on Friday morning following short weather presenting stints on the Seven show. He has also appeared on Ten's The Project.

While Bartholomew was teary-eyed during Friday's show, the bubbly presenter will return to Sunrise's base in Martin Place to become the fifth member of the presenting team.

"For the last three years I've travelled for the last three years with the best bunch of blokes," Bartholomew said.

"It has been an absolute blast guys."

The shake-up comes amid a major overhaul of Australia's highest-rating breakfast program, with a new set to be unveiled on Monday.

Mac's appointment follows weeks of speculation, with reports claiming Rob Mills and Emma Freedman were the hot favourites for the plum gig.

Bartholomew was surprised on-air by her parents and partner on Friday morning who said they were looking forward to having her home more.

Sunrise executive producer Michael Pell said Mac was a good addition to the team.

"The audience will get a lot of things from Sam. What they won't get is predictability. He's a lovable, unique talent with a razor sharp wit which will create many memorable Sunrise moments," he said.
