Desperate Housewives, Thursday, May 10

Channel Seven, 10pm

As always in Wisteria Lane, there's all manner of nasty business festering behind the neat flowerbeds and picket fences. A scheming Orson (Kyle MacLachlan) returns offering comfort and cups of tea in an effort to woo back Bree (Marcia Cross), who is estranged from her fellow housewives. He intends to keep it that way. Meanwhile, the freedom that Lynette (Felicity Huffman) has been enjoying as an empty-nester proves all too brief; Gaby (Eva Longoria) gets some unexpected assistance; and Susan (Teri Hatcher) fights to prevent the adoption of her unborn granddaughter. Croissants are baked and questions about the responsibilities of parenthood arise in several households. In its eighth and final season, Marc Cherry's snappily executed black comedy has had a welcome burst of energy: the plot is pumping, the deceptions are piling up and the sense of fun is infectious.
