24: Corey Hawkins takes over from Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer

Fox has found a new lead actor to fill the big shoes of 24's hero, Jack Bauer, played by Kiefer Sutherland for nine seasons.

Corey Hawkins, who has appeared in Straight Outta Compton and The Walking Dead, has been cast in the lead role of Eric Carter in 24: Legacy, the latest revival of the action-thriller franchise.

So far, the project amounts to just a pilot episode for a potential series that would air next season with an all-new cast.

Hawkins will play an Army Ranger who returns home from combat to his wife in Virginia and quickly learns trouble has followed him. He turns to 24's Counter-Terrorist Unit (CTU) to save his life and stop a large-scale attack.

At the Television Critics Association this month, Fox execs promised a diverse lead for the new version of the show, and said a second main character, a female CTU agent, would be cast later.

Sutherland said in 2014 he had no interest in returning to the role despite Fox's advances, and has since signed to star in a new thriller for ABC, Designated Survivor, in which he'll play a newly installed president.
