The season finale of Homeland will answer a lot of questions, and actor Shaun Toub plays the man who is at the centre of most of the answers.
Toub's character is the Iranian intelligence officer recruited by the CIA, Majid Javadi. Toub aims to be more than a cookie-cutter villain, with the actor telling The Hollywood Reporter: “It's always more fun for the audience to watch multifaceted characters.”
Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and Majid Javadi (Shaun Toub) in a pivotal moment about who the CIA bomber might have been, earlier in the season.
He remained relatively coy on the fate of the character and the storyline, but hinted “the question is what is Javadi thinking now and how is he going to perform. He's a survivor”.
It's obviously not expected that Javadi will come out on top, but it's clear that he won't be going quietly into the night. “He's in a position of power now. How he's going to use this power is the question."
An Iranian-American, Toub says he has mostly avoided portraying negative Middle Eastern characters on American television and Javadi is “an interesting character” rather than a “run-of-the-mill Middle Eastern terrorist”.
Javadi knows how to press people's buttons, including Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin).
“If you want me to play the role of the bad guy, the antagonist or the 'terrorist', if that's what you want to call it, there better be a good reason why the character is such."
Despite some of the violent acts committed by his character, Toub wanted to present Javadi as “possibly charming, and have a human side to him”. One of the most violent acts was stabbing the character of his wife with a wine bottle.
“That was a difficult scene for me. I had to try to understand why he was doing that because I had an issue with it," Toub said. "He was like a caged animal with his back against the wall. He had no other cards to play at the time."
And as Javadi runs out of cards and we get closer to an ending, the fate of several characters will be decided. And hopes are high, with Toub telling TV Guide: “I promise you it's finishing up with a bang. It's going to blow your mind. It's that good.”
