Australian actress Judy Davis is joining the reboot of the US action series, 24.

20th Century Fox has dusted off the franchise, which aired between 2001 and 2010, and will re-launch the series in the new year.

24: Live Another Day is currently in production in the UK.

Davis, a two-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe and Emmy winner, will play a British woman who is the widow of a notorious terrorist.

Perth-born Davis has starred in A Passage to India, My Brilliant Career and the TV miniseries Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows.

More recent credits include Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story, Page Eight and The Reagans, in which she played former US first lady Nancy Reagan.

The original 24 starred Kiefer Sutherland as Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) agent Jack Bauer. Each full season of 24 episodes followed a single day in Bauer's life.

Sutherland will reprise his role in the series.

24: Live Another Day will consist of 12 one-hour episodes. It will still play in "real time" but there will be time jumps between certain episodes.

Several of the original series actors, including Kim Raver, William Devane and Mary Lynn Rajskub, will also return for the series.
