Mad Dogs.

 FX, 8.30pm

In season one, male bonding kept four fortysomething blokes alive when an innocent trip to Majorca turned ugly. In season two, things are getting desperate as Woody (Max Beesley), Baxter (John Simm), Rick (Marc Warren) and Quinn (Philip Glenister) attempt to make their way back to England but end up trapped in a desolate Spanish town with a stolen €3 million. This is a polished, surprisingly subtle psychological thriller that deftly switches between humour, unsettling moments and bursts of unexpected violence. Expertly cast, the on-screen chemistry is obvious. Topping it off is a tight (very sweary) script, while the cinematography feels more filmic than television. Season three has already been commissioned so who knows where this show will end up.
