Matt Okine will be Triple J's breakfast host with Alex Dyson.

Sydney comedian Matt Okine will replace Tom Ballard as co-host of Triple J's breakfast show, starting in January.

Ballard announced his resignation last week, saying that he planned to "focus on my highbrow and searing stand up (i.e. dick jokes) and endeavour to annoy Australia via other mediums". His final show will be on December 13.

Okine, who will begin in the role on January 13, won the Best of the Fest (Local) award at the Sydney Comedy Festival this year and was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe.

He has previously performed at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, Homebake, Falls Festival and Reading, and supported Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari.

Okine won a rave review from Fairfax critic Craig Platt at this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival for his show Broken Diamond. "Last year's joint-best newcomer winner is bound to become one of Australia's most popular stand-up stars," Platt wrote.

"We are absolutely rapt Matt is joining the Triple J family and can't wait to see what Matt & Alex get up to on breakfast in 2014," a Triple J statement read.

Okine joined Ballard and co-host Alex Dyson on air this morning for the announcement.
