"Is this a newsflash? I;ve [sic] just been fired," Hinch tweeted on Monday evening.

"As somebody once said. That's life. Watch this space," he told his close to 30,000 followers.

Hinch’s one year contract with the Melbourne's 3AW was due to expire in December.

According to the station - which is owned by Fairfax Media, publisher of this website – Hinch was told by management his contract would not be renewed.

"Life will not be the same without Derryn around but we believe listeners will react more than favorably to the changes we have in mind," 3AW general manager Shane Healy said.

"Radio has withstood the immense challenges of the digital revolution much better than any other traditional media but we, like print and television, cannot afford to stand still.

"3AW, Melbourne's most successful radio station of the modern era, must position itself to take advantage of the exciting possibilities opening up in the digital world and changing audience expectations."

The statement suggested a new role may be made available to the veteran presenter.

A replacement host is expected to be named in the coming days.

"In the past 10 years 3AW has stood behind the broadcaster through a series of controversies. Only last Friday 3AW gave the broadcaster the day off to fight in court a charge of failure to vote," Mr Healy added.

3AW colleague and mornings presenter Neil Mitchell was quick to show his support for the man nicknamed "The Human Headline".

"Good luck to Derryn. The fat lady hasn't warmed up yet," he tweeted.

According to 3AW Hinch will be back behind the microphone at 4pm Tuesday "as per usual".
