This sweet family show has never pretended to be anything but a lighthearted jaunt through white, middle-class life, its one concession to the ethnic diversity of suburban Australia a stereotypical Greek boy. But what happens in this Valentine's Day special, when room-mates Matt (Jacob Allan), Jake (James Stewart) and Coby (Ryan Corr) rib each other about their secret admirers, is unacceptable. As Jake opens an unsigned card, Matt jests, ''I bet it's from that guy at the Thai restaurant,'' and, assuming an exaggerated effeminate voice, adds, ''He likes you.'' Matt goes on: ''I told you not to scoff down all his free money bags. Sooner or later, you're going to have to pay the piper.'' Oh, how the lads laugh, and the conversation moves on. The gag might seem as harmless as the show itself but in that short exchange a dangerous perception is not only reinforced but encouraged.
