Veteran television journalist Peter Harvey has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The Channel Nine reporter has been admitted to hospital after falling ill on a recent trip to Italy.

A Nine Network spokesman said the 65-year-old returned home to Australia and had since been diagnosed with cancer.

Doctors today will determine a course of treatment for the Walkley Award-winning reporter, but they are confident they have detected the cancer early and will be able to manage it.

In a statement from Nine, Harvey was upbeat, positive and pragmatic about what needed to be done.

"Pardon the pun, but you can't cop this one lying down," Harvey said.

"You have to get up and fight it. I have no intention of going anywhere yet."

Nine's head of news and current affairs, Darren Wick, said the thoughts of everyone at the Nine Network "are with Harves and his family through this difficult time".

"We all love him. He's a great colleague, a mentor to so many young reporters and producers, a wonderful storyteller and a terrific person to have around the place," he said.

"We expect to see him back, wandering the floors of Channel Nine very soon."

Harvey tweeted last night that his recent trip to Italy was great, and the highlight was a "speedboat ride to Venice hospital ! And back again of course!"

"OK - back in hospital for a couple of big tests tomorrow-really really keen to get back to work."

He also tweeted his thanks for all the messages of support he had received since falling ill.

This year, Harvey was admitted to hospital after he was attacked by two dogs in Centennial Park in inner Sydney.

The dogs caused injuries severe enough to require surgery.

Harvey’s month-long overseas trip had to be cut short by five days when he fell ill.

He had visited his wife’s family in London, and also travelled to Dubai and Florence before becoming sick in Venice.

Nine News Sydney presenter Peter Overton and other colleagues are visiting Harvey in hospital today.
