Very few celebrities can make people willingly stand for hours in the rain with their underwear on their heads. But Ellen DeGeneres has very strong powers of persuasion.
Hundreds of fans of the American talk show host descended on Melbourne on Wednesday, after they were told a trip to Los Angeles and the chance to meet DeGeneres were up for grabs.
Having been encouraged to show their "down underwear", many had bras and undies visible among some zany and creative costumes.

During a live cross from her California studio, DeGeneres told the four best-dressed duos to come up with a rap worthy of the prize.
After some dubious rhyming efforts, sisters Emily and Liz Pattison were selected and duly became hysterical.
A short time later, DeGeneres told another sister act, Denise and Tania Awad, that they too were headed for Los Angeles.

The Awad sisters dressed themselves in khaki and called themselves the Ellen Army, while the Pattisons took a day off university to appear in a home-made cardboard box plane.
Liz Pattison said she couldn't wait to head to the US.
"It's the best experience of our lifetime," she said.
Tania Awad was similarly ecstatic.
"I'm still waiting for someone to slap me. Like wow," she said.
Others went a step further.
Among the other more bizarrely dressed fans were brother and sister Sam and Eva, who travelled to the city in the early hours of the morning.
Sam came dressed as a panda, complete with visible underwear, while Eva was somewhat understated in a box made to look like DeGeneres's book, Seriously... I'm Kidding.
Geelong friends Harry Gist and Daniel Babic, dressed in matching white tights and stuffed Y-fronts, spent 14 hours waiting for their chance to impress.
They said it was all worth it for the chance to meet their idol.
"We slept in the streets in the rain but she's worth it," Harry said.
DeGeneres will visit Australia next month.
