Bowie fans bring flowers to Brixton

Fans gather in Brixton, London, the birth place of iconic rock star David Bowie, to mourn his passing and celebrate his life.

Broadcaster Channel Five received a dozen complaints after the emotional episode on Monday night, which showed Angie Bowie tearfully grappling with the shock death of the iconic musician.

The author learned of her ex-husband's death hours after the public when she was told of his passing off-camera.

"I haven't seen him in so many years, I can't make a big drama about it. I just feel like an era has ended," she said in the show's diary room. "With his passing, I'm so very sad."

"Stardust is gone," she later added while being comforted by other contestants, referring to his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.

Celebrity Big Brother viewers slammed the program's producers on social media after the episode went to air, accusing them of exploiting her.

But Angie's manager Ray Santilli defended the former model's decision to stay on the program and said she was given plenty of time off-camera to process the news.

"She had plenty of time to consider her position," he told British radio. "She made the decision to go back in the house, she made the decision to be interviewed afterwards."

"Obviously when Big Brother was talking to her and asking questions, it is emotional. The whole Big Brother experience is emotional and she knew that before she went in to the house.

"Channel 5 have been magnificent. They've left it entirely up to her to make the decision. She had no pressure."

Social media users also criticised Angie for deciding to stay in the house, going as far as to accuse her of capitalising on his death.

"I'm not sure what disgusts me more. That Angie Bowie has decided to stay on CBB, or that CBB is using a clip of her sobbing as promotion," tweeted one person.

"Presumably Angie Bowie has shown some respect and quietly left the Celebrity Big Brother house?" said another.

The former couple were estranged after their divorce and had not spoken in more than 40 years, Angie revealed on the show. According to The Independent, their filmmaker son Duncan Jones has been estranged from Angie since he was 13.
