The operative phrase is ''inspired by'' the works of Arthur Conan Doyle as his Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes a very 21st-century sleuth kitted out with the latest technology and a modern forensic brain, while Dr John Watson (Martin Freeman) is turned into a former army officer with a phlegmatically nice line in keeping the boss placated. Of the many takes on the legendary detective, Sherlock stands proudly in realising the humour of the source material without becoming bogged down in sycophancy. A Scandal in Belgravia transplants the action from 18th-century Bohemia to high-society London, where a prominent family is being faced with the exposure of scandalous photographs. Writer Steven Moffat throws in enough hook-involving international espionage to really muddy the waters, making it less elementary and more ''What the hell just happened?''
