The Voice producers have ruled out recalling a losing contestant after Carmen Smith left for breaching the "spirit of the show".

Producers made Smith, who was on Joel Madden's team, leave after deeming she may gain an unfair advantage over her appearance in a new Guy Sebastian music video.

Our priority as we move into the voting period toward the finale is that all of the artists are on a level playing field.

Sebastian's video for the song Gold, which was released last Friday, heavily features Smith who won the battle round over Melbourne mother-of-two Michelle Serret-Cursio.

A Nine spokesperson confirmed that this was not a stunt, rather a genuine action in response to an inadvertent mistake.

The Nine Network's director of development Adrian Swift said the decision to ask Smith to leave was not taken lightly.

He said her appearance in Sebastian's video clip may give her an unfair voting advantage with viewers.

"Our priority as we move into the voting period toward the finale is that all of the artists are on a level playing field," Swift said in a statement.

"In our business we are often confronted by these tough decisions and unfortunately at this time it's been decided that it isn't appropriate for her to remain in our competition.

"We wish Carmen well and thank her for a wonderful contribution to the show thus far."

Smith said in the statement, released by Nine, that she has been a regular back-up singer for Sebastian and enjoyed appearing on The Voice.

"It saddens me that I am leaving The Voice much earlier than I had hoped. However, I've loved every minute of it and respect the decision that has been made by Joel and his team," Smith said.

"I've sung on Guy's albums and been part of his band for many years so I'm thrilled to be in the clip and am looking forward to getting back to work and also working on my solo career."

The decision to make Smith quit will not result in the recall of Serret-Cursio, says a Nine spokeswoman.

Instead, only one and not two as is the case with the other three coaches, will leave Madden's team after the first round of live eliminations.
