The Filthy West, Nat Geo Adventure, 8.30pm
NOW there's a title the folks at Tourism WA wish they had thought up themselves. Filthy, in this case, means ''good'', possibly even ''gnarly'' or ''bodacious''. This self-made doco follows Australian kite-surfing pioneer Ben Wilson and a bunch of Australian and American pals on a 2½-week road trip up and down the West Australian coast looking for the filthiest waves available. It doesn't start off in the most promising fashion - the kite-surfing action isn't terribly spectacular and the friends do some surprisingly dumb things, such as getting their campervans bogged to the axles on a beach. But things soon pick up with bigger waves, more impressive photography and bigger winds causing bigger spills. One particularly riveting sequence has the friends seemingly risking life and limb kiting in what looks like an angry washing-machine surrounded by rocks.
Movie Talk: The Godfather, Studio, 7.30pm
HOST Peter Bart was deeply involved in the making of The Godfather as an executive with Paramount. Here he is joined by the film's producer, Al Ruddy, to reminisce about the many dramas and strokes of serendipity that occurred behind the scenes of the troubled production. It's fascinating stuff: Francis Ford Coppola got the director's chair mainly because bigger-name directors wanted nothing to do with the film; studio execs thought Al Pacino was too clean-cut to play a gangster; Mario Puzo was left distraught after a restaurant run-in with Frank Sinatra. Tonight's second episode has Bart chatting with the online gambling spruiker, Samuel L. Jackson.
