While temperatures are expected to cool over the coming month, the summery start to the season is expected to push the city into slightly higher than average temperatures overall.

After all the fun and stunning vistas of the Balloon Spectacular puffy coat season is still on its way, Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said.

"For the first 10 and a half, 11 days, Canberra has been quite warm especially for maximum temperatures," Ms Westcott said.

"However, this is likely to change for the rest of Autumn into April and May."

Canberra's Autumn will be near to slightly above average.

"Typically, Canberra sees mornings around 11 degrees and maximum temperatures of 24 and a half degrees. This year we are expecting temperatures to tend for the season near to slightly above average for this period of time," Ms Westcott said.

This is up from last year.

"Last March wasn't as warm - the temperatures were very close to average or 0.3 degrees below," she said.

This week will move from a hot 31 to a more chilly 22 degrees within three days.

"[Wednesday] is going to be the warmest then we are going to start seeing it cool on Wednesday and reasonably cold on Friday. So we are looking at probably 22 degrees on Friday, which would be the coolest we've see so far this March," Ms Westcott said.

Mid-week, a trough extending from northern New South Wales to the southeast inland from the coast, coincides with expectations of a chance of rain.

"[The trough is] straddled between two weak high pressure systems. A front is expected to join up with the trough on Thursday, pushing it to the far northeast of the state," the bureau said.

The forecast says there is a slight chance of a shower on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday is expected to be dry, but there will be a chance of a shower on Sunday.

"Looking into the weekend we are going to see temperatures around the mid-20s, so 26 to 25 with the chance of a late shower or storm on Sunday," Ms Westcott said.
