It’s not over yet either; there’s more to look forward to in July.

The overall rainfall for last month was 81mm making it our wettest June in three years, well up from the June average of 40mm.

Sean Carson, senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, said the levels almost broke the record from June 2007, which was a torrential 92.8mm.

“It was also double the entire rainfall for autumn, which was only 40mm in total,” he said.

Mr Carson said last month's rainfall was remarkable.

"Especially considering winters of the last 10 years have been very dry," he said.

Temperatures were also hotter than normal, with an average maximum temperature of 13.8 degrees, 1.5 degrees over the June average.

An increased level of cloud cover meant that the nights heated up.

The average minimum temperature for June was 1.4 degrees, making this month the warmest for the city in five years.

But all of this has made for a slow start to the snow season, as good snowfalls in May were followed by heavy rain in June.

Fortunately for the ski resorts, moderate snow falls in the last week have arrived just in time for the school holidays.

“There’s the prospect for 10cm later this week,” said Mr Carson. “It’s not huge, but it’s moving in the right direction now for the holidays. I’d say they’re looking at some big snow events mixed in with some big rainfalls.”

Looking into July, there’s more wet weather in store. Although the average rainfall is 41.4mm, the Bureau of Meteorology says there is an 80 per cent chance of July levels exceeding that.

The average maximum temperature is expected to be 11.4 degrees, dropping to -0.1 degrees at night.
