If Thursday hits its predicted peak it will mark the ACT's longest March heat spell on record.

Wednesday's high of 34 degrees equalled Canberra's 1983 record of nine consecutive March days above 30 degrees.

And if we hit our predicted tops of 32 degrees on Friday and 33 on Saturday, the summery streak could stretch to 12 days.

The Bureau of Meteorology's senior climatologist Agata Imielska said Canberra's last shot at smashing that long-standard record was in 2009, where we had six consecutive days above 30 degrees.

But she said enjoy it while you can as a cooler, wetter April could be on the way.

"Summer still has its grip on us and we're still getting those summery conditions and warm coming through," she said.

"Our outlook for autumn is favouring warm conditions for all of autumn but in particular March had really strong odds for warmer conditions which is what we're experiencing right now.

"We are expecting for April odds favouring wetter conditions. With the outlook picking p some wet conditions coming through in April that also has an impact on our daytime temperatures so if we're seeing more rainfall we'll get a bit more cloud and that'll keep the temperatures a bit lower."

Weatherzone meteorologist Jacob Conje said overall last week was the third hottest March week on record for Canberra.

He said: "It's likely due to the influences El Nino had on us in the summer season spilling over into March into early autumn as that phenomena dissipates."

"It is not an usual phenomena [although] in term of statistics for March we are well above average," he said.

"For March, the mean max temperature is 24.7 degrees and we have had what is likely to be nine days that Canberra reaches over 32.5 degrees, that is considerably above the monthly average.

"Luckily for Canberra it looks like temperatures will be slowly decreasing, we could see some hotter evenings until Sunday but from next week we'll see a gradual increase of temperatures back into normal averages for the season or close to it.

"Increased cloud cover and on and off storms are likely to affect the region. I'm not saying you won't see an extra spell of heat but it seems unlikely at this stage."
