The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted an increased chance of wet conditions across large parts of mainland Australia, including the ACT, for winter.

Above-average day and night-time temperatures are also predicted, with a four in five chance of warmer nights for large parts of Australia from May to July.

Weatherzone meteorologist Gux Dixon said the expected rising temperatures would be largely due to record warm waters across the Indian Ocean off Western Australia influencing the amount of moisture reaching Australia.

"Basically it looks like at this stage we should be in a neutral El Nino phase before winter even becomes established, which in essence has a good chance of increasing daytime temperatures across southern Australian including the ACT," Mr Dixon said.

"In terms of winter and spring rainfall, we are also looking at above-average rain for the coming months."

Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Blair Trewis gave a breakdown of these wetter months, explaining there was a 50 per cent chance of higher than average rainfall for May, which was set to increase by a further 20 per cent over June and July.

Mr Trewis said this would follow a mild but dry April, which saw maximum day temperatures averaging about 3.5 degrees higher than normal, at around 21 degrees, and nights about 1 degree above usual, often sitting around 8 degrees.

And there should be similar trends for the next week, as unusual warm weather for this time of year continued, Mr Trewis said.

Days are set to reach 23 degrees on Friday and Saturday, and between 18-21 for the rest of the week.

Nights should top at 13 for the weekend, but fall significantly as of Monday.

"There is quite a lot of rain forecast for the weekend, with one to four millimetres for Saturday, and six to 20 millimetres for Sunday," Mr Trewis said.

"It's quite a bit of rainfall compared to what's happened in the past few months."

So while you'll need your umbrellas over the weekend, your warmest jackets can stay in the closet for now.
