Heading off on a weekend "tree-change" soon? Might want to pack the thermals.

Popular Victorian tourist haunts Daylesford and Mount Macedon have seen light snow today as the mercury plummets.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued warnings for possible minor flooding in several catchments in Melbourne, north-eastern Victoria, the Goulburn and Broken basins and West and South Gippsland.

At Ballarat, the mercury hit 6.3 degrees at 1pm, up from a bone-chilling 3.7 at 11am, but about the same as the overnight temperatures.

In Melbourne, this afternoon's showers are expected to become heavier and turn into rain tonight. Winds are also anticipated to strengthen, up to 35 km/h.

The mercury has hovered around 10 degrees for most of the day in the city.

The rain will continue into tomorrow morning and make for a damp weekend. The bureau's forecast suggests that the rain will dissipate into showers, which are expected to persist for most of the day.

Sunday brings the chance of showers until the afternoon, and Monday is expected to be a partly cloudy day.

The little rays of winter sunshine won't last, though. There will be a possible shower on Wednesday, and isolated showers on Thursday.

Meanwhile, in Canberra, rain turned into snow as a cold blast hit the nation's capital.
