The warning of strong wind has farmers around Canberra on edge because scarcity of feed in paddocks after a dry autumn has left stock more susceptible to weather extremes.

South East Local, Land Services district veterinarian Bill Johnson said good early weather warnings had kept stock losses to a minimum.

"Lambing is the big issue, anyone with new lambs or on the point of lambing will be watching for the change with winds and snow," Mr Johnson said.

The last rain was still lying about in paddocks indicating the soil profile was full of water, and while some stock were standing around in water, graziers had plenty of high ground and shelter.

Collector farmer Gary Poile says the dry autumn had left only short green grass covering the ground, with "no feed whatsoever".

Wind and rain was the biggest worry. "Most stock can take one or the other, but not when they are together," he said.

Mr Poile said paddocks were water-logged. "It looks like the Everglades back towards the village. Water is getting away as fast as it is coming down, there's still debris from a fortnight ago. For some people it's too wet to get out to check on flood gates [across creeks]."

Graziers were getting by this winter because there had not been severe frosts and although it was cold, the ground was warm enough for a bit of growth.

Lake George is continuing to fill slowly, and further north on the edge of the Federal Highway Rowes Lagoon is beginning to fill. The property's owner, Rob Hunt, says it is getting closer to capacity. "We had 150mm of rain in the last 10 days, the dams are running over."

Meanwhile widespread rain has lifted the forecast in crop production for 2016-17, contributing to the total gross value of Australian farm production rising to $58.5 billion - around 12 per cent higher than the average value for the past five years, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences.
