Up to three centimetres of powder fell at Thredbo on Tuesday night, with more forecast to follow throughout Wednesday.

But while residents of Australia's alpine regions are tipping a bumper trade for this year's ski season, meteorologists are anticipating a slow start.

Thredbo's Stuart Diver said early bookings and a decent snow outlook have buoyed locals' hopes for another stellar season.

The resort will fire up the snow guns from May 23 before the slopes officially open on the June long weekend.

"The general consensus is El Nino has gone and La Nina will be coming some time in spring which means it's a neutral season this year," Mr Diver said.

"Generally speaking neutral seasons have above average snow falls so we're looking pretty hopeful at the moment."

Mr Diver said pre-season accommodation bookings are up across the resort "which is fantastic for this time of year".

"Down in the mountains we're very, very hopeful that it's going to be an above-average season which would be perfect because we've had a couple of great seasons and it would be great to get another one on the back of those," Mr Diver said.

"Last year was great, it was a really consistent season all the way through. There was no 'Snowmageddon' like we had the year before, where we got about one-and-a-half metres in four days, but there was consistent snow the whole way through so it was a long season.

"The first couple of weeks were a little bit slow but the rest was fantastic, it went all the way through to the end in October."

Perisher is also pleased with its pre-season bookings and the prospects for the upcoming ski season.

"Perisher is excited about the upcoming winter with temperatures dropping and the weather pattern starting to see storms develop," a spokesman said.

"Our snowmaking team are busy preparing to start making snow later this month as we prepare for opening day on June 10."

But Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said it's unlikely the slopes will receive a decent dusting until later in the season due to all of the warm air hanging around.

"It's difficult to say how the season will turn out overall but it'll most likely be a slow start given we've got warmer than normal seas surrounding much of Australia still, that means the air flowing across the Alps is generally going to be warmer than normal, I think it's probably going to take time before it does get cold enough to put some decent snow on the ground," Mr Dutschke said.

But that shouldn't stop Canberrans from jumping in the car and heading down to the Snowies for a weekend, he said.

"Opening weekend can be a good laugh even without snow but if you're going there relying on some fresh natural snow, there's a good chance you'll be disappointed.

"If the timing is right and a front happens to go through then, and fronts can occur anytime and bring snow anytime, but early in the season they're more likely to be not strong enough to get rid of the warm air for long enough so they'll probably only bring brief, decent falls," Mr Dutschke said.

"Even though it might be a slower than normal start it doesn't mean it will end earlier than normal. It may even be a good end to the season. Last year it turned out that way, a pretty ordinary start but a good September. That could happen again this year too."
