Storm warning lifted

A storm warning for the ACT is over.

Earlier tonight, Canberrans were being warned of flash flooding and dangerous winds over the coming hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued at 3.09pm a severe thunderstorm warning for the ACT alongside South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains, Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, Riverina Forecast Districts and parts of the Central Tablelands.

Very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging winds are predicted however a Bureau meteorologist said locals should avoid a hailstorm.

"There are storms tracking their way over the next few hours," he said.

"They're moving over to the ACT area and associated with these storms is the potential for flash flooding and dangerous winds."

The warning was lifted shortly after 7pm.

The State Emergency Service has advised people to move cars under cover, secure loose items and keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

When indoors, people should unplug appliances and avoid using the phone if possible.
