The State Emergency Service had units on high alert after the bureau issued a severe weather warning for the territory and said flash flooding was a possibility.

But Canberra Airport recorded only 12.4 millimetres of rain from 9am on Thursday, with Tuggeranong receiving 9.2 millimetres.

It was enough to help get Scrivener Dam overflowing, as photographed by reader Richard Tuffin.

The forecast for Friday is for a partly cloudy day with a maximum of 20 degrees.

"Cloudy morning with the risk of a light shower. Sunny periods developing in the afternoon. Winds southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h," the Bureau of Meteorology's forecast said early Friday morning.

A bureau spokesman told ABC radio that the wet weather of recent days appeared to be over for now.

"Although it is very cloudy at the moment, there's not much in the way of rain. ... Some of the cloud should dissipate as the afternoon unfolds ... basically conditions have fined up," he said.

The weekend is expected to be cool, and there is the chance of some showers during next week.

Thursday night's rain was enough to cause some roofs to leak, with fallen trees and branches also requiring the assistance of ACT Fire and Rescue and the Rivers and Tuggeranong SES Unit. There were nine calls for help in total, but only minor damage reported.

The rain caused more damage on the roads though, with emergency services responding to nine accidents, most in the afternoon.

''The morning was fine, we didn't seem to have any issues,'' an ACT police spokesman said on Thursday evening. ''The weather wasn't as bad as it was this afternoon but since 3pm we've attended nine collisions all over Canberra - two in Wanniassa, [one each in] Spence, Red Hill, Macgregor, Griffith, Chifley, Bruce and Acton, and there was a more serious collision up in Fraser.''

Ambulance paramedics also reported attending nine accidents, and treated 11 patients.

Four of those were in the two-car accident in Fraser, with three men in their 20s and a woman in her 40s taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Wet conditions were thought to be a factor in most of the collisions.

''With the wet weather, we urge people to drive a little more cautiously than they would,'' the police spokesman said.

''Slow down a little bit, drive to the conditions, turn your lights on and … allow some extra braking room.''

The good news is, the bureau says the rain should ease over the weekend.

''At worst, we're saying a chance of showers [Friday] morning and then maybe a couple of showers again on Sunday but nothing expected really on Saturday at this stage.

''It's literally just going to be the odd shower here, the odd shower there and not huge rainfall totals with it.''
