Wet weather prompts calls for help

January 30, 2012

The ACT State Emergency Service has received 14 calls for help this morning following the wet and windy weather.

An SES spokesman said Canberra's southern suburbs of Kambah, Bonython, Curtin, and Mawson were the areas most affected, but all damage was very minor.

SES volunteers and ACT Fire & Rescue crews had responded to incidents of leaking roofs, as well as trees and branches across roads and pathways.

"SES volunteers have also attended a residence at Latham after a six metre tree had fallen onto a pergola that also damaged a telephone line," he said.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, 16.2mm of rain had been recorded at Canberra Airport by 9am this morning. Scattered showers have been forecast for the rest of the day, with the chance of thunderstorms from midday.

ACT Policing said there have been two minor car accidents in today's wet weather. The first on Parkes Way next to the Commonweath Avenue Bridge at around 6.40am, and the other at Coppins Crossing at 8.30am. Both were single vehicle minor accidents and no one was hurt.

Residents who require storm and flood assistance can call the ACT SES on 132 500.
