Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the rain falling over Canberra was forecast to ease as we head into a weekend packed with sport.
“It is likely Canberra will receive between 30 and 50mm of rainfall between Thursday afternoon and Sunday evening although the bulk of this rain will fall on Thursday and Friday,” he said.
"We're going to see widespread and even rainfall in Canberra for the rest of Thursday although this will become more patchy and isolated on Friday.
“There is a chance of thunderstorms on Friday, which may make the isolated rainfalls heavier.”
Mr Sharpe said rain would ease from Friday evening although there might be a few showers on Saturday morning and from the late afternoon onwards.
“The middle of the day is the most likely period to be dry on Saturday,” he said.
The news is sure please the Australian Running Festival, with more than 6000 runners expected to run along Canberra's roads this weekend.
The festival is set to begin at 6.30am on Saturday with the longer marathon races to begin on Sunday morning and finish by about 1pm.
The GWS Giants will play host to the 14th placed Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval on Saturday afternoon as they seek to extend their impressive start to the season.
The Raiders will take on the Newcastle Knights with Dane Tilse set to take on his former club after re-signing with the Raiders for another two seasons.
As result of the recent heavy rainfall the annual Tidbinbilla Extravaganza, due to be help at the popular nature reserve on Sunday, has been postponed.
In a statement, the ACT government said the rain had caused the event area to become waterlogged and the decision had been made in the name of public safety.
They said the event would be rescheduled for the spring.
