Canberra has had more than 83mm so far this month, with between 10-20mm expected to fall over the next seven days. The monthly average is just 58mm for February.

While many Canberrans have been enjoying the recent rainfall and bursts of greenery, it means more work for one devoted Canberra public servant and his ride-on mower.

Territory and Municipal Services city operations officer Raymond Russell said it had been a quiet summer until recently, with very little rainfall meaning he had a lot less to do.

But with the recent deluge during the past week's thunderstorms, the quiet time was over.

''It's greened up, I've actually got to mow here tomorrow,'' he said.

Mr Russell has worked in horticulture with the ACT government for 40 years, starting in the Yarralumla nursery when he was 16.

''We had to take the flowering plants into Old Parliament House, into the restricted areas. I'd set up all the pot plants in there for them,'' he said.

While the ride-on mowers have become larger since he started, Mr Russell said the number of green areas in Canberra's CBD shrunk.

''There's a lot less green areas and a lot more buildings now,'' he said. ''I'd like to see more green.''

He could be in luck, with thunderstorms forecast for Wednesday night and rain expected every day until Tuesday.

The ACT has now had more than 83mm of rainfall over February so far, almost 30mm more than the monthly average of just 58mm.

Comparatively in January, the Territory was bone-dry, with just 5mm of rain over the entire month.

The wild weather in the past week won't be the end of Canberra's summer rainfall, with more thunderstorms and rain expected for the rest of February.

Bureau meteorologist Katarina Kovacevic said there was a wet week ahead for Canberra, with storms developing on Wednesday and Thursday and light rainfall into the weekend.

But she said the rainfall was unlikely to be anything like what the ACT experienced during the past week.

''Last week rainfall was in the order of 49mm in an hour, which is quite a large total for the area. We're not expecting to see anything like that at this stage,'' she said.
