Wrap-up warm: snow forecast for ACT

Show comments

ACT meteorologists predict more rain and even the chance of snowfall for the ranges over coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast up to 40 millimetres of rainfall across Canberra on Monday, with showers expected to continue until Thursday.

Snowfall is also predicted down to 1300 metres and 1500 metres respectively for Monday and Tuesday in the territory's ranges.

Perisher and Thredbo Resort have been uploading some pretty exciting photos of some of the season’s first significant snowfall overnight, as well as this video from Thredbo Resort on Monday morning:

Duty meteorologist Karna Nair said the slopes surrounding the capital could receive anywhere between 10 and 20 centimetres of snowfall.

"It could be more, depending on how far the moisture will move in from the east," he said.

"The chance of snowfall in the city itself is really, really low. But we can get small hailstones, like we did last week."

Perisher tweeted that it was up to 21 centimetres of new snow, about 11am on Monday.

Thredbo spokeswoman Susie Diver said there had been 15 centimetres of snowfall by midday, with the majority falling from 5am onwards.

"We're not expecting too much more in the next 24 hours," she said.

In Canberra, the Bureau has reported more than seven millimetres of rainfall since midnight with further falls expected throughout the week.

Strong winds have also been predicted to persist over coming days. Winds are expected to reach up to 45km/h on Monday before surging to potentially 50km/h on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, heavy rain, damaging winds and high tides caused by a super moon are forecast to hit Sydney on Monday morning as emergency services brace for a day of wild weather.

A foggy start to Melbourne's working week has left some shivering in temperatures below zero and has caused flight delays at Melbourne Airport.

The forecast for the coming days for Perisher:

  • Tuesday: Min -1, Max 3. A few snow showers.
  • Wednesday: Min -1, Max 5. Possible morning snow shower.
  • Thursday: Min -3, Max 6. Sunny. Patchy morning fog.

The forecast for Thredbo:

  • Tuesday: Min -1, Max 2. A few snow showers.
  • Wednesday: Min -2, Max 3. Possible morning snow shower.
  • Thursday: Min -3, Max 4. Sunny.

Canberra's sportsgrounds closed

The ACT government announced the closure of all government sportsgrounds, citing potential damage to turf surfaces and unsafe conditions for players.

There have been 37 individual cancellations as a result, including the St Monica’s Primary School carnival and numerous training sessions for sports such baseball, football and AFL.

The Nicholls synthetic field is exempt from the closures.

An ACT government spokeswoman could not confirm when the grounds would reopen, saying the decision would be made on a day-to-day basis.

Further information on the closures can be obtained through Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.
