Whale trapped in shark net

Date

Fisheries officers are working to free a whale trapped in a shark net off the south-east Queensland coast.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry says the net is caught around the juvenile mammal's head in waters off the Gold Coast.

The six-or-seven-metre juvenile is entangled off Kurrawa Beach and is accompanied by an adult whale.

"The net is caught around the animal's head, and it is currently dragging the net, heading north-east," Queensland Shark Control manager Jeff Krause said in a statement.

A team from Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrols is working in rough conditions to cut the net.

It's the second whale to be trapped off the Gold Coast this migration season.

Another juvenile had to be freed from a fishing line in August.
